I need help identifying the musical instrument used in some music by
Ennio Morricone. I'm a big Morricone fan, so much that I want to learn
how to play an instrument just to be able to play him. I just need to
know which instrument I want to play.

Here is a selection of tracks that contain wind solos, most probably
oboe or clarinet. If someone can confirm which instrument is played in
some of the following themes, it would really help me!

1. The Untouchables - Four Friends
2. Malena - End Titles
3. Novecento (1900) - Romanza
4. Il Lungo Silencio - Felicita' Sorvegliata
5. Marco Polo - On the Way to the Orient
6. Marco Polo - The First Love
7. Lolita - Love in the Morning
8. La Disubbidienza - Morire e Viverti
9. Il Vizietto - Melodia d'Amore
10. Cinema Paradiso - Projection for Two
11. Cinema Paradiso - First Youth
12. Cinema Paradiso - Childhood and Manhood

I guess he made it too easy with "The Mission" track, Gabriel's Oboe :)
I don't have your titles, but his instrumentation seems to be quite similar.
In "For A Few Dollars More", the track, Vice of Killing the opening intro
is an oboe. The track, Ecstasy of Gold from "The Good, The Bad & The Ugly
starts with an oboe. The track The Strong from the same movie begins
with a clarinet (I think).

It may be the recoding production, or my equipment, but his oboes sound a
bit synthesized.
Since the above were made in the 60s, I doubt if he used syncs in his
orchestra at
that time. Nevertheless there seems to be some coloration. A kind of
hardness, a
lack of air and bloom.

I'm a fan, but must admit I find his early studio recordings sound quite
flat and lacking
detail on my reproduction equipment. A symptom of all this is when you can't
tell,
or you are unsure what instrument is playing.

Cinema Paradiso. Its funny, ALL I can remember is the violin. I better go
back
and watch the movie (don't have the ST).

At least in Cinema Paradiso it is an Eb Alto Saxophone.
